Security issues this week

Published by caribguy under Blogroll

There are three security vulnerabilities from Microsoft this week that you should be aware of;

  • DirectX versions 10.0 and prior
  • Windows Media, all versions
  • Internet Explorer versions 7 and prior

Also;

  • Quickbooks Online Edition version 10 and prior
  • Apple Quicktime versions prior to 7.3.1

Make sure you receive the Microsoft updates today, and download any updates for Quickbooks and Apple.

Updates from Microsoft should be set to automatically download to each personal computer.

How to set your computer to automatically update from Microsoft:

  • Go to Start and right-click on My Computer
  • Go to the Automatic Updates tab and click on “Automatic (Recommended)” and set whatever time you like
  • Click Ok.

If you need assistance with this or to download any of the updates shown above please contact me.

Accountants - enough Microsoft software for an office of ten!

Published by caribguy under Blogroll

If you are a registered accounting firm you may be eligible for enough business software to license an office of ten. This includes both server and desktop software at an unbelievable US$299!

Signing up is free and gives you unlimited support from Microsoft, a free copy of Microsoft Office Accounting Professional, and access to training and promotional materials. For an additional US$299 you also receive all the software shown below.

For any small accounting firm, $299 for a fully licensed office of ten is a fantastic deal. Most just don’t know it exists.

If you join the Microsoft Professional Accountants Network and pay US$299 you receive:

  • 10 copies of Windows Vista Business
  • 10 copies of Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 with Business Contact Manager
  • 10 copies of Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007
  • 10 copies of MapPoint 2006
  • 10 copies of Microsoft Project Professional 2007
  • 10 copies of Microsoft Office Accounting Professional 2007 (US only)
  • 10 client licenses and Microsoft Small Business Server
  • A whole host of other software

Look at the list again and let me lay this out for you;

Microsoft Small Business Server allows for a more robust and secure network environment. Everyone will have to log in to get access to your accounting and client data. It also means all documents are stored in a central location rather than scattered across desktops. Management of the network overall is also streamlined and consultants (such as myself) can receive automated reports and error logs to make sure everything is running optimally. This software retails for over $500 by itself.

You also receive 10 copies of the full Microsoft Office Professional 2007 platform (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook) that retails for over $200 a piece. Now you can standardize your desktops and utilize the collaborative features between Office, and your new Small Business Server. Schedule tasks for anyone else in the office, view their calendar, secretaries can even view their boss’s email if they need to. Done properly you can streamline your office processes and have employees working much more efficiently.

MapPoint is cool if you travel to customer locations a lot, and Project can manage large accounting or other projects that require multiple steps over a period of time.

Your new server can even include an internal web site, which all people point to by default, that is a central announcement and message board, staff phone list, events calendar, whatever!

For US$299 and implemented properly you take a giant leap forward for your office effectiveness.
