Super-duper green computers

Published by Heather Clancy under ZFeeds

If you think about sheer performance-per-watt potential, it’s pretty hard to beat a supercomputer. So any company with gargantuan transaction processing needs might want to scout the latest Green500 list for insight.
This list was brought to my attention by SGI, which has 11 entries in the top 100 greenest systems: all of SGI’s entries [...]

Finavera Renewables (which has both wind and wave energy projects around the world) has negotiated a deal with an unnamed corporate investor who plans to put up $1 bilion for wind power projects that will create up to 300 megawatts of capacity in British Columbia.

In the case of Frog’s Leap Winery, organic doesn’t just mean staying away from fertilizers and [...]

Where to ditch that old iPhone? Recycling and mobile phones

Published by Heather Clancy under ZFeeds

This story from the Environmental Leader is perfectly timed, considering the overwhelming media din over today’s iPhone launch.

Windows update kills ZoneAlarm

Published by caribguy under Blogroll

The Windows Update that came out yesterday (July 8, 2008) somehow causes ZoneAlarm to not be able to get out to the Internet.

I could ping a web site address but could not browse to it.

Update July 11: Here’s Zone Alarm’s Fix (7.0.483.000): http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/cfu/en/zassAEN.html?ver=70_483_000&oem=1025_zl&offer=offer_pctuneup_en

Here’s more info from Zone Alarm: http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/pressReleases/2008/LossOfInternetAccessIssue.html

If all you’ve done at this point is to disable ZoneAlarm, here’s a fix;

  • Open up Control Panel, Add Remove Programs
  • Click the box at the top for  Show Updates
  • Scroll down (for me close to the bottom) and find Security Update for Windows XP (KB951748)
  • Remove it
  • Reboot

Review disputes power-savings potential of solid state drives

Published by Heather Clancy under ZFeeds

I’ve been as guilty as the next person about talking up solid state drives (or SSDs, as they are unfortunately called by the techno-babblists) as a wonderful device for reducing power consumption AND weight in notebooks. And any other system for that matter. But, fact is, I don’t have any review capabilities. So, I feel [...]
