Windows update kills ZoneAlarm

Published by technicalguy at 9:27 am under Blogroll

The Windows Update that came out yesterday (July 8, 2008) somehow causes ZoneAlarm to not be able to get out to the Internet.

I could ping a web site address but could not browse to it.

Update July 11: Here’s Zone Alarm’s Fix (7.0.483.000): http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/cfu/en/zassAEN.html?ver=70_483_000&oem=1025_zl&offer=offer_pctuneup_en

Here’s more info from Zone Alarm: http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/pressReleases/2008/LossOfInternetAccessIssue.html

If all you’ve done at this point is to disable ZoneAlarm, here’s a fix;

  • Open up Control Panel, Add Remove Programs
  • Click the box at the top forĀ  Show Updates
  • Scroll down (for me close to the bottom) and find Security Update for Windows XP (KB951748)
  • Remove it
  • Reboot

    I got hit by this schemozzle yesterday and it cost me an afternoon’s work. Currently I have my system operating with Zone Alarm’s Internet Security set to medium. I know that’s not ideal, but I also have some firewall protection via my ADSL router (Dlink DSL-504T). My inclination is to keep going as I am, rather than uninstall the Microsoft update – and wait for Zone Alarm to circulate a patch. How safe do you think my strategy is? My worry is that if I uninstall the MS update, it won’t get installed again and presumably it contains some stuff that’s desirable.

    This is a DNS update for a vulnerability that is a concern. From what I’ve read it is a server-based problem and all DNS servers from all manufacturers are being patched all the same day. From the desktop side I think it’s okay to delete (unless anyone else has more info?).
    If you have automatic updates turned on then Microsoft will definitely try again – in fact this is something you may have to watch for otherwise you will get kicked off again.
    The advantage I see for deleting this patch is that you don’t have to remember to boost up your ZoneAlarm to high again once their update arrives. I’m always reluctant to downgrade the overall firewall, there’s so many other things out there.
